The Charlotte basketball team doesn’t have quite the resume to deserve NCAA Tournament at-large consideration, but that could change if the 49ers handle Butler on Wednesday.
Charlotte is struggling at the wrong time of the season, dropping two straight Sports Picks and four of six. It lost 68-61 at home to VCU on Saturday. Terrance Williams led Charlotte with 13 points and Willie Clayton was the lone 49er in double figures with 12. Charlotte started this season as the hottest team in the A-10, winning 16 of its first 19 contests, including its first nine.
Butler has won three straight. It escaped 59-56 at George Washington on Saturday despite going the final 7½ minutes without a field goal. The Bulldogs (20-4, 7-2 A-10) improved to 3-2 on the road in the conference, but only because they built enough of a cushion to withstand GW’s feisty comeback. Butler led 48-31 with 12 minutes to play, but the Colonials’ full-court press and Roosevelt Jones’ poor free throw shooting — he entered the game shooting 59.1 percent and went 2 for 9 from the line, all in the second half — helped get the Colonials back into the game and set up a frenetic finish. Senior Rotnei Clarke led the Bulldogs in scoring for the fifth consecutive game, since returning from a neck injury that sidelined him for three-and-a-half contests. The 6-0 guard scored a team-high 14 points at George Washington, while adding six rebounds, a game-high four assists and three steals.
